Quite to the contrary, it looks like the updates that DID install caused the problem. I was not asking about any failed updates. It looks like you may have mis-interpreted my question. I again unplugged and re-plugged the card reader from the motherboard, and it came right back to life. It is worth noting that the card reader on one of the computers regressed to not working again after a few restarts. The computer recognized the reader, it showed up again in the device manager. With the computer fully started up again, I plugged the USB connector for the card reader back into the motherboard.
